Google Sites is a free tool offered by Google that lets you create simple websites. You don’t need to have any technical knowledge to get started with Google Sites.
Some of our readers have been asking lately how they can add their website created using Google Sites to Google Search Console or Google Webmaster Tools. This tutorial will help you to get the job done.
Add Google Sites (Classic) To Google Webmaster Tools
This method applies only to Classic Google Sites. For New Google Sites, check the next method below.
Step #1. Go to search console and login using your Google Account.
Step #2. Then on the left sidebar that lists all your sites, click on the down arrow and click + Add property
Step #3. It will ask you to select a property type. Just select URL prefix and paste your site’s URL and click continue.
Since we are talking about Classic Google Sites, your site’s URL should look like this:
https://sites.google.com/site/XXXXXXXXX/
where XXXXXXXXX is the unique path of your website.
Step #4. Search console will then ask you to verify your site’s ownership. Out of the listed ways for verification, we will go with HTML tag verification. Copy the meta tag completely for next steps. Don’t close this tab.
Step #5. Open your Google Site in a new tab and click on the gear icon on the top-right corner and click on Manage Site.
Step #6. Now scroll down this page and in the Google Webmaster Tools section, paste the verification tag we copied from search console and click save.
Step #7. Now open the Search Console tab and click the Verify button on the Verify ownership dialogue.
Now search console will look for the tag you have pasted in your site, and once it is done, you will be shown this dialogue box.
Your Classic Google Site is successfully added to the search console now.
Add Google Sites (New & Classic) To Google Webmaster Tools
In this method, we will make use of Google Analytics since, in the new Google Sites interface, there is no option to add Google Webmaster Tools verification meta tag. This method can be applied to both new and classic Google Sites.
Step #1. Go to Google Analytics and login using your Google Account.
Step #2. Click on the Admin button on the bottom left corner of the page.
Step #3. On this page, you have two choices. Either create a new account and then a property for your Google Site. Or, you can create a property for your Google Site into an existing account.
I personally like to keep all my websites separate so we’ll go with creating a new account. So, click on + Create Account button.
Step #4. Fill in all the information. In the Website URL bar, fill in the address of your Google Site. Click Get Tracking ID when finished.
Classic Google Sites URL Example:
https://sites.google.com/site/xxxxxxxxxxx/
New Google Sites URL Example:
https://sites.google.com/view/xxxxxxxxxxx/
Step #5. It will then provide you with a Tracking ID. Select and copy it for the next steps.
Step #6. Now go to your Google Site and click on the three dots beside the Publish button and click on Site analytics.
Step #7. Simply enter the Tracking ID you copied from Google Analytics in the popup and click Save.
Step #8. Go to search console and login using your Google Account.
NOTE: Use the same Google account to login into Search Console as you used in Google Analytics. It won’t work with a different account.
Step #9. Then on the left sidebar that lists all your sites, click on the down arrow and click + Add property
Step #10. It will ask you to select a property type. Just select URL prefix and paste your site’s URL and click continue.
If you followed everything perfectly then as soon as you click the continue button, you should get this prompt:
In case you don’t get this prompt then select Google Analytics from the given verification methods and it will verify it for you.
That’s all folks!
I hope this tutorial was able to help you link your Google Site with Google Webmaster Tools. If you have any doubts or queries, then feel free to ask in the comments section below. Cheers!
It does not verify. Asks I add meta tags or other alternatives in header. How does one do this in new Google sites?
If you add Google Analytics to your site using the same Google account as you search console, it shouldn’t ask for meta tag verification.
Thank you Ritesh! I had trouble finding this information elsewhere. If people are having trouble, also remove “/home” from the URL prefix in Step 10.
Great tip Eric and thanks for your comment 🙂
