IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol. IMAP is a standard email protocol that helps in retrieving and manipulating emails stored on the receiving server through SMTP.

SMTP IMAP Message Flow

As compared to POP, IMAP doesn’t move emails from the receiving server to the end user’s email client. It just copies them.

As a result, IMAP lets you keep emails on both the receiving server and email client.
